A small guide to Munich's nightlife

Dear Visitor,

this subpage of munich-partyguide.de is designed to guide foreigners through the vast nightlife of Munich by using our site and giving general, useful hints.

Should any parts of this subpage be outdated or if you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us at visitors@munich-partyguide.de!

Please bear in mind the german format of date and time!
Date: dd.mm.yyyy
Time: 0:00-12:00 = 0-12 am and 12:00-24:00 = 0-12 pm

You can translate any part of a page on munich-partyguide.de (e.g. event/location-descriptions, news, reviews, reports (called “Reportagen“) using engines like Google Language Tools or Altavista’s Babelfish. The results are, well, rather horrific, yet you’ll probably better understand the meaning :)
A useful currency conversion site can be found at www.oanda.com

General information about munich and its nightlife

... important spots
... how to travel around
... links

Important Spots

Flughafen München (Munich Airport)
Munich’s airport is situated about 20 kilometers (15 miles) outside of the city. Still, there is one rather big club there called Nightflight (very modern with mixed music and people)

Hauptbahnhof (Central Station)
Many strip clubs and cheap hotels around here. Clubs and dicos not more than 5 to 10 minutes away by foot are Regency (people aged 25+), Palais Club Prive (former brothel, now house music), Nachtgalerie (about thousand people and cheap drinkig at the weekends) and Munich 55 (once a bavarian pub, now redesigned into a Club-Bar)

Ostbahnhof
Exit in the direction of „Orleansplatz“ , cross the big bus station and the main street to get to some of the best and cosiest bars in munich, which this district called „Haidhausen“ is famous for.
Or head straight away from „Orleansplatz“ and follow the „Kultfabrik/Kunstpark Ost“ and „Optimol“ signs to get to these two party areas. Five minutes away and situated directly next to each other, they offer probably the biggest party mall in europe, combining more than 26 clubs and bars on an area about a square kilometer in size.

"Schwabing" (at "Münchner Freiheit" station)
Munich's district "Schwabing" and it’s main street „Leopoldstrasse“ are synonymical for some of the best and most famous bars in munich. Choose „Stadtteil : Schwabing – West“ at the „Locations“ mask to get a list of the most well-known bars and clubs there. Some of the latter worth mentioning are Skyline (at the upper floor of a building with panorama view), Prager Frühling (50ies style decoration, mixed music), Frankies (black and mixed music) and Reitschule Orangerie (often hosting well-reputated and big in-parties).

Other well-known locations and events
Oktoberfest (called „Wiesn“ among bavarians): Biggest mall in the world, every year for two weeks from the 3rd Saturday in september on. Many facts can be found at www.oktoberfest.de/en/home/
Hofbräuhaus: Many foreigners know this one, more details here.
Rathaus: seat of munich’s major, directly at the center of munich.
Frauenkirche: Munich’s city symbol, only several hundred feet away from the Rathaus

The 3 P’s
Pacha, Parkcafe, P1. These three discotheques represent the common stereotypes about munich and it’s inhabitants among germans from other major cities like Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne or Frankfurt. Snobby and pretentious people in clubs with very strict doormen (e.g. at P1 only members and well-known guests, called “Stammgäste” are granted entry) trying to stay undisturbed within a small circle of elitist and high society people, nick-named “Schicki-Micki” among munich’s citizens. Some other clubs try to imitate them with more or less success by keeping their door very hard and letting only fashy/pretty/... people in ( we call that “Pseudo-Schicki-Micki”), which can be very upsetting if you’re new in the city and don’t know where to go. Keep an eye on our eventdetail called “Publikum” to avoid being rejected at the door.

How to get there / get home ?

Public Transportation

Munich’s system of public transportation is very good. Detailed information and timetables in english can be found here.

Important notice: due to restructuring at the main tunnel connection Ostbahnhof-Pasing, S-Bahn-traffic is shut down there on saturdays from 8 pm on till sunday. This will probably last till december 2004

Till when are the different public-transportation-systems usually on duty ?

Bus 11/12 pm, certain nightlines till morning
Tram 12pm/1am, certain nightlines till morning
U-Bahn 1/2am
S-Bahn 1/2 am , airport line S8 till 2.45am

Taxi
The light-yellow painted taxis with a small shield (light on = free, off = passengers on board) on top can be reached by calling 089/21610 or 089/19410. Fees are: base price 2.60 € + about 1.25 € for every kilometer.
